Explaining Ayahuasca to my 65-year old aunt
Describing the ineffable to someone who has no clue what it is — AND to those who think they know
My 65 year old aunt asked me about the ayahuasca experience. So I figured I'd finally share my opinion for someone who has no clue what it is (and for those who think they know).
I was initiated as an ayahuasca shaman 11 years ago — that’s 11 years living in the jungle, fully immersed, training and practicing.
I've served over 1000 people so far, facilitating 5000 unique experiences.
I've also communed with the plants over 600 times myself.
Yet, I rarely ever speak about the ayahuasca experience itself.
It’s what the plant taught me — don’t talk about it, be it.
Talking is not forbidden. It’s not taboo.
It just doesn’t make sense.
Firstly, there is no such thing as “the” ayahuasca experience.
Every single experience, each time for each person, is completely unique.
No matter how many times you drink.
There are shared themes, but nothing is guaranteed, nothing is certain.
You may or may not have visions, physical purges, emotional releases, cosmic experiences, ego dissolution, or even direct communion with the divine.
There are countless factors that influence what happens, one that makes a huge difference is The Dose.
I was trained to intuitively judge the dose for each person and measure precisely, to the gram.
A bit less — too weak. A bit much — you could be overwhelmed.
But just the right dose, and you have an experience that will stay with you for life, because it will change you forever. In ways that simply cannot be described or explained.
The biggest mistake I’ve seen people make, that I made a lot myself, was relating the experience to another. Thinking it makes any sense. Even to others who have had an experience.
The reality is that it’s so personal — it’s just for you.
It only makes sense and matters to you.
Sharing feels great and helpful, but rarely does hearing an insight from others actually shift them.
What happens instead, is that the person thinks that they “understood”, they "got it", and that that’s enough.
That’s the ego at its peak. Its ultimate form of control — “understanding”.
Understanding is not transformation.
When you get that, you realize you aren’t changing, you’re just farming insights. Putting them on a mantle like trophies collecting dust.
Understanding may be the beginning that leads to deep transformation, but too often, people settle for "getting it" and stay where they are.
Ayahuasca is not a magic pill. It illuminates, but it cannot do the work for you.
That’s why, I only offer ayahuasca to those who are willing to do the preparation *and* the integration.
Because that’s where the journey truly lands.
That’s where it becomes practical, life-changing, and permanently lasting.
